AISI 201 is a popular austenitic stainless steel grade due to its:
- Affordability
- Strength
- Wear resistance
- Corrosion resistance
AISI 201 is designated as follows:
- First digit: "2" indicates that AISI 201 belongs to the austenitic stainless steel group.
- Last two digits: "01" is the AISI 201's sequential number in this group.
Unlike domestic steel grades:
- AISI letter marking does not indicate the chemical composition or physical properties.
- AISI stands for "American Iron and Steel Institute," where the standards for stainless steel and other metals were developed.
AISI 201's chemical composition includes:
- Iron: about 68%.
- Chromium: 14-16.5%.
- Manganese: 8.5-10.5%.
- Copper: 2%.
- Nickel: up to 1.5%.
- Silicon: up to 0.8%.
- Carbon: up to 0.12%.
- Other impurities: sulfur, phosphorus, nitrogen (total less than 0.1%) do not affect the alloy's properties.
The optimal chemical composition of AISI 201 provides the alloy with not only high performance properties but also additional features that facilitate mechanical and thermal processing of the steel. The material is easily deformed and deep drawn, and it is also weldable.
AISI 201 stainless steel has high corrosion resistance, a significant margin of mechanical strength, and resistance to acids and other chemically active compounds.
Technical characteristics of AISI 201:
- Yield strength: 205 MPa.
- Permissible tensile stress: 515 MPa (minimum value).
- Brinell hardness (HB): 201 units.
- Density: 7.71 g/cm3, which is the average value among stainless alloys of this group.
Due to its high performance properties and affordable cost, AISI 201 has become widely used around the world. It is used to manufacture:
- Door, window, and furniture hardware.
- Elements of household appliances and other equipment.
- Kitchen utensils and accessories.
- Other products and components that will be operated in an intensive mode in an environment with high humidity.
